How many elderly people in recent decades have been labeled as “cold”, “selfish” or “narcissistic” when in fact they had unrecognized autism? Conversely, how many people with a personality disorder have been perceived as “just autistic”? See less

If the topic is interesting to you, we can talk about it. In my opinion, there is a topic here that deserves very careful analysis, because in practice there is indeed confusion.
Why do people often confuse autism with narcissism?
In both conditions, others may perceive the person as:
– cold;
– callous;
– selfish;
– uninterested in the feelings of others;
– a bad partner.
But the internal mechanisms can be quite different.
For example:
A person with autism may not notice that their partner is upset. Not because he doesn’t care, but because he doesn’t read non-verbal signals well enough.
A person with pathological narcissism may well understand that their partner is suffering, but devalue this or use it to maintain control over the situation.
From the outside, the behavior sometimes looks similar.
However, the reasons are different.
