Vasil Levski Airport – Sofia joined the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower initiative

It is with great joy and pride that we announce that Bulgaria is now part of the global initiative Hidden Disabilities Sunflower, which unites over 325 airports around the world. This is an important step towards a more relaxed, understanding and accessible journey for people with hidden disabilities and their loved ones – those whose challenges often remain invisible but deserve attention, patience and support.

Sofia is the first airport in Bulgaria to officially join the initiative, confirming its commitment to people with different needs.

The official start of the initiative was given by Jesus Cabayero, CEO of SOF Connect, and Vladislava Tsolova, president of the association “Autism Today”.

“We are proud to be part of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower network and in doing so confirm our ambition to become a 5-star regional hub that provides accessible travel for all,” said Mr Caballero.

The sunflower symbol is a subtle sign that the traveler may need more time, clearer communication or assistance. Identification badges are available free of charge on request at the Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 Security desks.

With the support of the “Autism Today” association, airport employees underwent specialized training to understand the needs of people with hidden disabilities. As part of the project for the new Terminal 3, the construction of a sensory room is also planned, providing additional comfort and safety.

We thank Sofia Airport, management and employees from the bottom of our hearts, for their dedication and support of causes that make society warmer, understanding and empathetic. Together we give people with hidden disabilities and their families a chance to be understood, respected and supported.

The sunflower – a discreet sign, a big message

The sunflower symbol in the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower initiative indicates that the person may have a hidden disability or specific need that is not immediately apparent. This is a sign of patience, understanding and support.

Why sunflower?

It is bright but unobtrusive, discreetly signaling support.

It symbolizes warmth, light and hope rather than regret or stigma.

It is both universal and easily recognized around the world.

As the sunflower turns to the sun, so we strive for a more accessible and empathetic environment for all.

With this small symbol, we give a big message of support and understanding to people with hidden disabilities and their loved ones.
